What is Porcelain Ceramic?

Porcelain is a type of ceramic that absorbs very little water (less than 0.5%). Since the grout or cement mortar requires penetration into the ceramic’s structure for bonding, it is not as effective on porcelain ceramic, and a strong bond will not form.

On the other hand, compared to regular ceramic, porcelain has a more compact structure due to its higher density and higher firing temperature. This makes it denser and heavier, and this feature increases its strength and durability, as well as its weight compared to regular ceramics. The higher weight of porcelain tiles is one of the challenges that can cause slipping and shifting of the tiles before the cement fully dries. To prevent this issue, using porcelain tile adhesive is recommended. Porcelain’s more compact structure also contributes to its higher weight. These two factors (low water absorption and high weight) mean that installing porcelain tiles requires stronger materials like porcelain tile adhesive instead of grout or cement mortar.

Tile Adhesive vs. Cement Mortar

Sahand Shimi porcelain tile adhesive is essentially an engineered cement-based mortar. Traditional methods involve manually mixing sand, cement, gravel, and other materials to create mortar. The effectiveness of this method heavily depends on the precision, experience, and performance of the workers, with a high possibility of mortar quality dropping due to changes in the proportions of materials.

This product, which consists of cement, minerals, and polymer additives, creates a flexible adhesive with high bonding strength, moisture resistance, temperature resistance, and standard setting time. It offers properties far superior to sand and cement while providing much easier and faster application.

Advantages of Porcelain Tile Adhesive Over Cement Mortar

In addition, due to the extremely thin layer of tile adhesive compared to cement mortar, the thickness of the walls of the structure is reduced, which results in a larger interior space, and ultimately, a lighter structure.

Applications of Porcelain Tile Adhesive

There are situations where cement mortar cannot be used for tile installation, and in these cases, porcelain tile adhesive is used for tiling:

  • Installation of porcelain ceramic tiles
  • Tiling over existing tiles
  • Tiling on surfaces that do not absorb water (such as Sahand Shimi two-component waterproofing, where tiling is only possible with polymer-modified porcelain tile adhesive)
  • Tiling in environments where thin-set mortar is needed to reduce the weight of the structure.

The powdered formulation of the porcelain tile adhesive is ready to use, requiring only the addition of a suitable amount of water. Therefore, it has a high preparation and application speed, resulting in significant time and cost savings in tiling.

The polymer additives in the formulation of this product not only provide strong adhesion for bonding the tiles to the surface but also make the cement-based mixture more flexible. Due to this feature, tiles installed with this powdered cement-based adhesive will have excellent resistance to structural stresses and building settling.

Additionally, due to the polymer additives in the adhesive, it has excellent resistance to moisture penetration, making it suitable for use in humid environments such as bathrooms and toilets.

Porcelain Tile Adhesive for Non-Porcelain Tiles (Standard Tiles)

Sahand Shimi porcelain tile adhesive can be used for installing all types of tiles and ceramics. However, if your tiles are standard and absorb water, you can use Sahand Shimi Super Standard Tile Adhesive, which is more cost-effective than porcelain tile adhesive but offers much higher bonding strength, quality, and durability compared to cement mortar.

To date, the quality and strength of this product have been confirmed by many professional tilers, builders, and contractors, and it is being used in various projects across the country.

Using Porcelain Tile Adhesive Outdoors

Sahand Shimi porcelain tile adhesive is a strong adhesive that performs well in outdoor environments with various weather conditions, but it is generally recommended for indoor use. If tiling is to be done outdoors, the better option is Sahand Shimi two-component tile adhesive.

For installing porcelain tiles outdoors using porcelain tile adhesive, it is recommended to replace one-third of the water mixed with the powdered porcelain tile adhesive with Sahand Shimi latex. For example, for outdoor use, mix one 5-liter can of Sahand Shimi mortar strengthening resin (latex) with 10 liters of water for every 3 bags (20 kg each) of porcelain tile adhesive (a total of 60 kg).

Installing Large Slab Tiles (Slabs) with Porcelain Tile Adhesive

The adhesive strength and bonding power of Sahand Shimi porcelain tile adhesive, especially when applied over a building primer, is sufficient for installing many large slabs. However, this adhesive is not recommended for installing tiles larger than 60 × 120 cm.

The best option for installing large slabs is Sahand Shimi two-component tile adhesive, which is specifically designed for installing large tiles, stones, heated floor systems, or in areas with high traffic pressure.

Tiling Over Existing Tiles with Porcelain Tile Adhesive

Sahand Shimi porcelain tile adhesive is an ideal option for installing new tiles over old ones without the need for demolition. However, for the best results, it is necessary to roughen the surface of the old tiles with a hammer or grinder before applying the new tiles with the porcelain tile adhesive.

If it is not possible to roughen the old tiles, Sahand Shimi two-component tile adhesive is a better option than the porcelain tile adhesive.

Using Porcelain Tile Adhesive in Pools, Saunas, and Jacuzzis

This product has high resistance to moisture, but for tiling in pools, saunas, jacuzzis, and environments exposed to direct moisture, Sahand Shimi pool tile adhesive is recommended. For environments with underfloor heating and cooling systems, Sahand Shimi two-component tile adhesive is also recommended.

  • For indoor pools: Sahand Shimi pool tile adhesive
  • For outdoor pools, saunas, and jacuzzis: Sahand Shimi pool tile adhesive with Sahand Shimi mortar strengthening resin (latex)
  • For underfloor heating and cooling systems: Sahand Shimi two-component tile adhesive is the best choice.

Calculating the Required Amount of Porcelain Tile Adhesive

The amount of porcelain tile adhesive required from Sahand Shimi depends heavily on the surface to be tiled. For smooth cement surfaces, one 20 kg bag of this product is sufficient for tiling an area of approximately 3 to 5 square meters.

Any irregularities, unevenness, bumps, or depressions in the underlying surface will increase the amount of adhesive required per square meter. To calculate the required amount of porcelain tile adhesive, you can use the calculator on this page or the dedicated calculator page.

How to Prepare Porcelain Tile Adhesive

To prepare the porcelain tile adhesive, mix one 20 kg bag with about 5 liters of water using an electric mixer (a 4:1 weight ratio). Add the powder slowly while mixing and continue until a smooth, homogeneous paste is achieved. Allow the mixture to rest for 5 minutes, then stir again briefly. The adhesive is now ready for use.

Surface Preparation Conditions

It is strongly recommended that both the back of the tiles and the surface where the porcelain tile adhesive will be applied are free from any contaminants, dust, paint, or grease. Any impurities on the surface will hinder the adhesive’s bonding ability and may cause the tiles to detach from the surface.

Using a Primer

The best method for preparing the surface before applying the tile adhesive is to cover it with a layer of Sahand Shimi building primer. Studies have shown that when tile adhesive is applied over a primer, its bonding strength is approximately twice that when applied directly to the surface without a primer.

Using a primer significantly enhances the bonding between surfaces and prevents the water in the adhesive from being absorbed by the surface, which helps to maintain the adhesive’s consistency and achieve maximum strength.

The Sahand Shimi building primer is applied in a thin layer using a brush or roller, and after it dries slightly, it is ready for the adhesive to be applied.

For gypsum surfaces or surfaces with high absorbency, it is mandatory to use a building primer before applying the tile adhesive.

Applying Porcelain Tile Adhesive

In the standard method of tiling with tile adhesive, first, use a notched trowel to spread the adhesive in parallel grooves on the surface. Then, apply a thin layer of adhesive on the back of the tile and install the tile on the surface within 20 minutes. For the best result, it is recommended to use a layer of Sahand Shimi building primer on the surface before applying the adhesive.

Method for Installing Tiles Using Porcelain Tile Adhesive

  1. Apply an adequate amount of porcelain tile adhesive using a notched trowel in one direction.
  2. Apply a thin layer of adhesive on the back of the tile.
  3. Install the tile, making sure that the grooves on the surface and the back of the tile are parallel and aligned. This will help to release the air trapped between the tiles, allowing them to bond better with the surface.

Note: The adhesive must fully cover the back of the tile to ensure a strong bond. Applying the adhesive in small spots on the back of the tile is not recommended.

Temperature and Workability Time

The ideal temperature range for using this product is between 15°C and 25°C. At lower temperatures, the drying time of the adhesive will increase.

The working time (pot life) after mixing the powder with water depends on factors like ambient temperature and the amount of adhesive prepared. It is generally recommended to only prepare the amount needed for up to 1 hour of work. After this period, prepare a fresh batch of adhesive.

Curing Time

The initial curing time under standard conditions (25°C) is about 24 hours, and the adhesive will reach its full strength after 28 days. This duration can vary based on factors such as temperature, humidity, thickness of the adhesive, and working conditions.

Expiration and Storage Conditions

This product has a shelf life of one year if stored in its original packaging in a dry place away from moisture.
