Tile adhesive vs. cement-sand mortar

Tile adhesive is actually an engineered cement-sand mortar. What is done in traditional methods is to make a mortar from a combination of sand, cement, gravel, etc. manually.

The efficiency of this method depends greatly on the accuracy, experience, and performance of workers, and the possibility of a decrease in the quality of the mortar with changes in the proportions of its ingredients will be very high.

However, in Sahand Shimi Normal Plus tile adhesive, with an engineered formulation, the materials are pre-mixed with precise and tested proportions and have acquired better properties with polymer additives.

These carefully adjusted proportions of cement, minerals, and polymers have produced a flexible adhesive with high adhesive strength and standardized workability and setting time. This combination offers properties far superior to cement-sand mortar, while also providing considerable ease and speed of implementation. In addition, due to the very low thickness of the tile adhesive compared to cement-sand mortar, the width of the structure’s walls is reduced, resulting in more interior space. Using Normal Plus tile adhesive outdoors

For outdoor tiling, it is recommended to combine this product with Sahand Shimi mortar reinforcing resin (latex) instead of one-third of the water used.

For example, to use this product for outdoor tile installation, one 5-liter gallon of Sahand Shimi mortar reinforcing resin (latex) should be used for every 3 20-kilogram bags of Sahand Shimi Normal Plus tile adhesive (total 60 kilograms) along with 10 liters of water to prepare the tile adhesive. 5 liters of mortar reinforcing resin (latex) used in the mix will replace part of the water used in the adhesive.

Calculating the amount of Normal Plus tile adhesive required

The volume of this product used depends greatly on the surface on which the tiling is being done. For smooth cement surfaces, each 20-kilogram bag of Sahand Shimi Super Standard tile adhesive typically covers an area of ​​about 3 to 5 square meters.

How to prepare Normal Plus tile adhesive

Mix each 20-kilogram bag of this product with about 5 liters of water using an electric mixer (4 to 1 weight ratio). To do this, slowly add the powder to the water while stirring and continue mixing until you achieve a uniform and homogeneous mortar.

Then give the mortar a rest for 5 minutes and then mix it again a little. Now your tile adhesive is ready to use.

Surface Conditions

It is strongly recommended that the back of the tile and the surface on which Normal Plus Tile Adhesive is applied be free of any contamination, dust, paint, and grease. Any contamination on the work surface or back of the tile will prevent proper bonding of the adhesive and the surface, and will ultimately lead to the tiles loosening and separating from the surface.

Using a Primer

The best way to prepare the surface before applying tile adhesive is to coat it with a layer of Sahand Shimi Construction Primer.

According to tests, the strength of tile adhesive when applied with a primer is approximately 2 times that of tile adhesive applied directly to the surface without a primer.

Using a primer significantly increases the adhesion between surfaces and prevents the surface from absorbing water in the tile adhesive, which will prevent the tile adhesive from shriveling and reaching its maximum strength.

Sahand Shimi Construction Primer is applied in a thin layer with a brush or roller to the surface and after drying for a while, it will be ready to apply the adhesive.

For plaster surfaces and surfaces with high absorption, it is mandatory to use a construction primer before applying the tile adhesive.

How to apply Normal Plus Tile Adhesive

In the standard tiling method with tile adhesive, you must first apply the tile adhesive in parallel grooves and in one direction on the desired surface using a notched trowel.

Then apply a thin layer of adhesive to the back surface of the tile or ceramic and install the tile on the glued surface within a maximum of 20 minutes. For better results, it is recommended to use a layer of Sahand Shimi Construction Primer on the desired surface before applying the tile adhesive.

Application temperature and workability time

The best application temperature for this product is between 5 and 40 degrees Celsius. At lower temperatures, the drying time of the adhesive will be longer.

The time limit for using powdered tile adhesive after mixing with water (workability time) depends on various factors such as ambient temperature and the volume of the prepared adhesive. In general, to achieve the best performance of this product, we recommend that you prepare only the quantities required for tiling for up to 1 hour and then proceed to make a new adhesive.

Setting time

The initial setting time of Normal Plus tile adhesive under standard conditions (temperature 25 degrees Celsius) is 24 hours, and the tile adhesive reaches its maximum strength after 28 days. This time depends greatly on various factors such as temperature, humidity, adhesive thickness, and application conditions and may be less or more.

Expiration date and storage conditions

This product can be used for up to one year if stored in its packaging and in a dry place away from moisture.
